Toadstool Spirits......

Working on lots of pieces at the same time at the moment..which is usually fine but I have to admit is a bit chaotic. When I have pieces drying I'm working on a a small group of these....'Toadstool spirits'.....which are not small..(see the pencil in the image as size ref)..I think these are going to be some of the biggest pieces that I will have for sale when they are finished.
The one in the image needs more work but I thought you might like to see what I'm up to.
The stem is solid wood and there is also a wooden frame in the head to support everything....so is really heavy I would say as heavy as 2 bags of potatoes!
Ive had to weight these guys due to how top heavy they are but i think Ive got the hang of it.
I love doing them dearly but quite often I have to sew them stood up to get to all the parts which has been a killer on my back....so liked doing the arms the best as I could sit down...
Ill keep you posted on the details of these for those who are interested but right now I'm still working on them and trying to get them finished before the Christmas rush.

In between making the large toadstools for The Imaginarium I'm making some smaller models to sell on Etsy. These are a new style for me on these bases and I'm really enjoying making them. These will be stained with tea and flashes of bright ink....Alice in wonderland-y / poisonous I think ..that's the idea anyway.
I do quite like the ghostliness of them being plain but I do prefer dirty and scuffed....
Ideally would like to make a nice big collection of them in time for Halloween but ill let you know more details about them when they are finished...but this style will be going to Etsy

Tea maker.........

A tea making spider...
I made her a while ago and her legs weren't quite right so I took them off and made her longer pink ones....now she seems happier.x

Trying to squeeze in a little personal project when I can.....there is always some sort of play with scale with me and it just seems to fascinate me.....making things bigger or smaller than they should be.
Mostly I have to admit its creating things bigger than they naturally are....like the moths and spiders.......but not today.

From the car boot this weekend I got a broken firescreen that once turned into a table. The embroidery is great but needs a gentle wash and press and will make some really fab wings for moths hopefully. The rest of the wooden pieces......well.... have now become another sort of screen....Ive used fishing line to make a spider web in it. Its going to be really helpful I think with displaying my spiders....
Its a bit tricky to photograph like this.....need to have a play around with it....x

Work in progress......

Ive been enlarging some of my patterns on my good old 'over head projector' and have tinkered about with this older pattern of a sleeping fox.....He still needs his tail sewing on.....this is my favourite size to make.....
working on  a big fat creature on you lap and sewing and working on the face is really rewarding and just seems really fab to do.
This foxy chap is going to get stained and his legs painted black and the hopefully some sort of cloak I think.
Hes going into a capsule collection for a really fab outlet.
Its a bit of a secret at the moment but I'm really quite thrilled.

I only got this tiny embroidered picture a few weeks ago and its has become one of my most favourite things.....It was in a second hand shop for 20p and the glass and frame were filthy.
I knew it had been hand stitched and with a little clean this magical garden came to life.
It has such tiny tiny stitches and its been done with such love.
Its objects like these that hold such stories for me....who made it and how it came to be given away....
It sits on my desk next to my computer a reminder that there is beauty everywhere........sometimes you have to give things a little dust and look harder................and some people have amazing eyesight and patience.

Moth hares............

Apologies for not blogging much on here........I'm using my face book page mostly now as it seems quicker to show and share images and just seems to be best for work at the moment.

Still doing lots of long days but I do love it.....a couple more creatures for The Imaginarium....Two Moths hares are nearly ready.....complete with antennae and two large and two smaller sets of wings....Have been wanting to make these for ages....

Rarely seen by humans moth hares are most active when the moon is fat and the nights are warm.
Initially created by witches as familiars these winged beasts are both powerful and mysterious. Legend tells of groups seen flying together at dusk.....

They will be £299 each and they will all be going to my Esty shop

Here's the first Bumble bee Ive ever made......I have a few more nearly finished so hopefully will have a very small number to sell soon.
I really wanted to make them as often as the moths but they have been very very problematic!
Getting them to the stage has been really tricky and getting the right colours for the fur alone was very hard.
I really needed to see the project out and have come back to them again and again for weeks now.
Utterly adore bees so hopefully I can iron out problems with them in the future....Ill have some more details on them soon...

Birds, Birds, Birds.........

I have a mini collection of birds ready for sale....
The birds will go into my Etsy shop at 7.30pm UK time this Friday the 17th May.

Prices £99-£130

Wednesday, 15 May 2013

The witch simply called them 'A&B' for that was their name.
A two headed spy created to see through the wood in the failing light.
Admittedly they were generally up to no good but when given the chance unexpectedly they sang.......and if only you could have understood the meanings you would have heard songs sung of 'never having to be alone'...

Yellow and Turquoise........

Took this image today of a little yellow bird Ive been working on I think its a new favourite... I love the colours together....

Friday, 10 May 2013

Heres a really early preview of something I'm working on....Ive been teaching myself how to cut glass and make things from it. Instead of soldering I wanted to glue and stitch the pieces together. Here are my first 'glass coffins' which I hope I will be available through one of my stockists soon.
I'm always seeing waste glass in skips and from old windows etc so I just wanted to be able to use it and include it in my work in some way.
I'm still learning lots from it but i really I love it.
The stitching and gluing needs refining but I wanted then glass segments to be joined with fabric in some way and I like how they interact with the birds textures and muted tones.

mirror mirror......

I thought I would share a mini tutorial which is really fast and I think can make a quite a fab gift or unusual way of displaying photographs.
These vintage hand mirrors are everywhere and I see them practically at every car boot or second hand shop I go to.
Check its in this style as all you need to do is twist the barrel/handle and it should turn quite easily. If it does then its should be good to use for this project.
Unscrew the handle from the bottom cap and it should literally fall apart into the pieces like above. You may have to slide down the small cap that is holding the bottom of the frame pieces together this is easily done.
Take the original picture out and using the clear plastic cover piece use it to trace over an image that you like. This can obviously be anything you like from a book page to concert tickets as long as they are thin...here I have used a picture of a bird from an old book.
Insert it and put back together simply..... it can be a little tricky to get everything back in the frame bit at the top but once you have slide on the handle and barrel cap and you are done.
Job done.

Mister Swindlehurst..........

Recently I was very kindly given a pair of scissors large and very heavy but built to last and in their own right are an amazing object.
This pair should easily last me the rest of me and somebody else's life if not longer.
I love the sequence of events of how objects arrive at their destinations and often their refusal at being discarded.
The previous owner acquired them as a donation from a tailors son who then gave them to me.
More often than not we don't own objects we are simply the caretaker of them.....so in the chapter where I have them it only seemed fit to engrave the tailors name onto the blade......
'Mister Swindlehurst'
Maybe one day my name will be added to the blades too or maybe it will always be a mystery of what the name means..who know its all part of the story........

Friday, 26 April 2013

Well this past week has been one of trial and error and lots of things have really not gone to plan work wise.
But you just have to ride out these times I feel even tho at the time they can prove to be hugely disappointing on a time wasting basis.
Is it time wasted tho?
No, its all down to development and some things work somethings don't. Toady I'm ironing some fabric envelopes for a another project that just didn't work out....but I love them all the same.

Something about neat stacks of envelopes and what they may contain....

In Case.............

I found this tiny case over the weekend...its meant for jewellery so you can work out how small it would be. I built a cobweb in it from nylon thread. I think its a really pretty result and a tiny pearly spider is all that is needed to finish it all off. Ive done a few very large cobwebs in the past now but they have all been out of clear thick fishing line so using a thin thread was tricky but I think its worth it.

Here's a large well actually very large mouse Ive been working on I like to make something big in between my other work almost like a project.
Shes been a lot of work and Ive done some very late nights obsessing over her.
Shes done now and I'm going to curl up and get some sleep myself.
